“ In World War II, after the Battle of Britain, it had become difficult for the Royal Aircraft Taking Pictures Unit ( R.A.T.P.U.) to procure aircraft. Private Barry O’Shannessey, a member of the R.A.T.P.U. and a big fan of Popular Mechanics magazine, took the most logical and economical approach to the problem. He built a wing suit from hessian tank covers and cow skin, and incorporated a built in camera. Once proven, multiple suits were put into service. There were some training issues, mostly around the need for the operator to rapidly close one eye and open the other, or vice a versa, when switching between the left camera viewfinder eye, and the right navigational eye. All whilst hurtling toward the ground. The intelligence the unit provided was considered so valuable, that many believe that Barry basically won the war for Britain. The official secrets act have kept Barry’s actions a secret.
