The Power Luge was the invention of Austrian Otto Von Shyster. A national hero, known as “Stork” to his friends, he was a gifted automotive engineer and former Olympic medalist in the Luge competition. In 1919 he developed a 7 litre 3 cylinder turbo charged engine. He fitted this, along with a propeller, to his best sleigh, creating a formidable machine suitable only for fighter pilots, Grand Prix drivers and national heroes. It was his dream to create The Sport of the Gods….. and he would dominate it. He lobbied the OIC tirelessly for 13 years for the sport to be made a part of the Winter Olympics. The headline event in fact. Their refusal was seen as jealously by Otto, but was claimed by the IOC to be the result of safety concerns. In time lawyers proved Otto was correct, but never the less he was forced to abandon his dream. The Power Luge mostly vanished from history, except for a brief period after WW2 when these boisterous machines became fashionable with winter commuters in Moscow. Unfortunately none of these commuters had the skills of fighter pilots, Grand Prix drivers, and National Heroes were illegal, so eventually the regular severe injuries saw the machines banned. Von Shyster, by now nicknamed “Stumpy” had greater success when he invented three quarter length latex cycling pants in 1970.
